Chris from Surviving the Specter very kindly nominated me for a Liebster Award! Thank you again!
This has been my most difficult post to date as I’ve been busy thinking on my acceptance speech 🙂 , how to answer the questions, who to nominate and what questions to ask them!
I must admit that I needed to research the Liebster award so here is the explaining link that I robbed from Surviving the Specter.
Now, here are my answers:
1. In what state and/or country do you live (if outside the U.S.)?
I live in the County of Cork, in Ireland. This is why my spelling may look weird to those from the US!
2. What is your favorite genre of music and THE band that goes with it?
That’s a tough one, not least because putting labels on music can cause arguments! I’ve always been a fan of Indie music which is a broad category. My band would be Green Day because many life events seem to be set to their music. (I don’t really consider Green Day to be Punk as I grew up in the Seventies, but let’s not argue 🙂 )
3. What is a life quote of yours?
“This too shall pass,” reminds me to enjoy the moment and helps me get through the bad times.
4. Where do you find solace?
In books. I can lose myself in a good book. I tend to re-read books I first read decades ago in times of stress. The Lord of the Rings is my go-to book when things are really bad.
5. What are three triggers you have?
These are fairly general:
I tend to shut down when feeling overwhelmed, which is not helped by my tendency to procrastinate!
I can take the weight of the world on my shoulders at times and obsess about myself and other’s actions and repercussions.
Tiredness can exacerbate my self-critical side.
6. Insert your favorite meme in the space below-
This is a bit random, but it’s my favourite meme of the moment. Those of you who have read my post about Historical Fencing will know that my sport of choice is HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). So this meme tickles me pink:
I’m a nerd who sword-fights! My inner child is alive and beaming.
7. What is a coping mechanism you use to combat your mental situation?
I’m very interested in Mental Health as I went through a few tough years that has thankfully ended. I never developed full-blown depression but I believe that I came close. I’m interested in how I escaped. Was it due to chance genetics, diet, environment? Or is being depressed merely a symptom of depression and not a cause? I’m a big fan of analytical thinking and stoicism and I believe that these help me cope. I try to analyse my feelings from the point of view of a dispassionate observer. I’m also addicted to enthusiasm and I throw myself into new projects that don’t always last but I love the buzz!
8. When you sit down to write a blog post, where does your inspiration come from?
Luckily at the moment my main problem is finding the time to write rather than finding material. Brain Sponge is a science-based blog about the brain and everything that goes with it. I’m interested in sharing techniques on keeping your mind and brain healthy, avoiding cognitive decline and learning and memorization tips, tricks and hacks. There’s plenty of research and techniques out there that I haven’t covered yet!
9. Right here, right now, say something to the person who has hurt you the most, beginning with, “I promise to…”
“… be ever civil to you.”
10. What one regret do you hold onto that you wish you could let go of?
The usual, I suppose. I wish I had more meaningful chats with a deceased loved-one.
11. What’s the most valuable piece of advice someone has given to you?
I’ve got two small kids, so the best advice that I can think of is parenting-related. It was “I won’t say it gets better, but it gets different!”
Here are eleven random facts about yours truly:
I have traveled to five of the seven continents, and I’m not done yet!
I briefly played harmonica and rhythm guitar in a band a long, long time ago.
I am trying to become truly bilingual by improving my Irish (Gaelic).
I am a football (soccer) fan.
I started drinking coffee this year after close to five years of kiddie-interrupted sleep! I’m now addicted.
I can juggle.
I am afraid of heights yet I have climbed hiked up a couple of mountains. I once looked down on a thunder cloud from Mt. Kinabalu.
I have been in control of a plane.
I have scuba dived in shark infested waters but have not been lucky enough to spot one.
I have found my one in seven billion.
Okay, here are my questions for my nominees:
Name one passion or pursuit that you have that’s strange, unusual or out of the ordinary.
What’s the scariest thing that you’ve done?
Why do you blog?
Is writing fun, a chore or a compulsion for you?
Which do you prefer – sunrise or sunset?
What are you most proud of?
Which would you prefer – beach or forest?
If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
If I may borrow one of mine: What is a life quote of yours?
What do you do to ensure you remember something?
What is your favourite Comedian, Musician or Artist?
Drum roll, please:
And now for the toughest part, my nominees. There is no particular rhyme or reason to whether a blog got included or not in my nominations, I mostly went with my gut feeling. Some excluded blogs may have already got a Liebster award or similar, or I may think that the followers are over 200 or may have just been unlucky that my nomination list got filled up too quickly!
I largely guessed if the following blogs meet the criteria:
Lost for Words
Clues To Life
Girl Still Hoping
I Heart Literati
Madam Sabi’s Blog
Curious Happy Blogger
My Life Open To read
